2022 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of DC Awards the 1st Cup of Hope Top Fundraising Award to Team Volanno & Breast Cancer Survivor Dawn Amore

The annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of DC in October is part of the largest breast cancer movement in the U.S.

Washington, DC – The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk of Washington, DC, is proud to announce that its very first Cup of Hope award winner is Team Volanno along with their team leader Volanno President Dawn Amore, who is a breast cancer survivor. The Cup of Hope award is a new tradition that will be presented annually to the walk’s top fundraising team. Team Volanno raised $31,248 for the 2022 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Washington, DC.

For Amore, who was diagnosed in 2019 at age 49, this was her and her company’s first time participating in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of DC, but her interest in breast cancer prevention started years ago. She explained, "I had participated in breast cancer walks in the past with my best friend's mom, who was like a mom to me. She had breast cancer twice. She provided me with support and encouragement as I went through my treatments—support that only someone who has walked in your shoes can provide. Sadly, in March 2022, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. She died 87 days later. None of us expected that cancer would affect our family again. I knew then that I wanted to do something to support the broader cancer community. And I picked the American Cancer Society Making Strides because the research and support that they give not only helps breast cancer but provides benefits and insights to fighting all forms of cancer."

More than 2500 participants attended Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Washington, DC, at the Tidal Basin on Saturday, October 22, 2022, raising over $389,000 for the fight.

Tswana Sewell, senior executive director of the American Cancer Society for Greater DC/Baltimore region, said, "We are very excited and honored to start a new tradition by presenting the first annual Cup of Hope to Team Volanno in recognition of their amazing support as the top fundraising team for the 2022 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of DC. Thanks to team leader Dawn Amore and Volanno for caring so deeply about fighting breast cancer that they raised over $31,000 to help beat this terrible disease through American Cancer Society-funded breast cancer research and free support services for breast cancer patients and their loved ones."

More than 287,000 new cases of breast cancer will have been diagnosed in the U.S. in 2022, making it the most diagnosed cancer in the U.S. other than skin cancer. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance that a women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. ACS recommends annual breast cancer screening beginning at age 45 with the option to begin at 40.
